The Ethical Use of AI in Clinical Practice

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used across clinical tasks such as drafting of emails and written tasks, summarising, helping with notes and reports. Alongside potential benefits, their use raises important ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities.
This members-only webinar is open to members of BSPA and/or ABA Australia and will be practical. It will explore responsible and ethical AI use in clinical practice, drawing on the ABA Australia Code of Ethical Practice and the BSPA Code of Conduct while also considering ethical issues more broadly. Key focus areas will include privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, and accountability when AI tools are used in any part of clinical work.
The session will also address maintaining professional competence and clinical responsibility, including how to avoid over-reliance, identify limitations and errors, and ensure clinical judgement remains central. Australian privacy and data law considerations will be covered, with clear guidance on safe handling of information and governance expectations.
The webinar will include a brief overview of AI concepts and terminology, plus examples of practical tools and applications clinicians commonly encounter. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the uses of AI to assist with decision-making, documentation, with a consideration of quality, safety, and ethical practice.
